At first, I thought it was related to file permissions or missing assets, but after digging deeper, I realized that the problem was more technical and related to the <strong>GD<\/strong> and <strong>Freetype<\/strong> libraries, which Matomo relies on to generate graphical elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Broken Icons and Missing Graphs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon inspecting the Matomo dashboard, I noticed that several small icons and graphs (like the sparkline graphs) were either not rendering or appeared as broken images. Initially, I suspected that it could be a file permission issue or perhaps some missing assets in the installation, but after verifying file permissions and caching, the problem persisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By enabling my F12 browser&#8217;s developer console, I saw that all requests to the images were returning a 200 status, meaning the images were being served, but they were still broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Root Cause<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Matomo system check, I found the following warning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"EnlighterJSRAW\" data-enlighter-language=\"generic\" data-enlighter-theme=\"\" data-enlighter-highlight=\"\" data-enlighter-linenumbers=\"\" data-enlighter-lineoffset=\"\" data-enlighter-title=\"\" data-enlighter-group=\"\">GD > 2.x + Freetype (graphic functionality) missing.\nMini graphs (sparklines) and images in Matomo mobile app and email reports will not display!<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>That was the clue I needed. Matomo relies on the <strong>GD<\/strong> library with <strong>Freetype<\/strong> support to generate graphs and other images dynamically. Without these libraries, Matomo can\u2019t render the small graphs (e.g., sparklines) and other image-based elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To resolve this, I needed to install and enable the <strong>GD<\/strong> and <strong>Freetype<\/strong> libraries for PHP. Here\u2019s how I did it on my <strong>Ubuntu<\/strong> server:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. <strong>Install GD with Freetype support<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>First, I updated the package list and installed the <code>php-gd<\/code> package, which includes Freetype support:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"EnlighterJSRAW\" data-enlighter-language=\"generic\" data-enlighter-theme=\"\" data-enlighter-highlight=\"\" data-enlighter-linenumbers=\"\" data-enlighter-lineoffset=\"\" data-enlighter-title=\"\" data-enlighter-group=\"\">   sudo apt update\n   sudo apt install php-gd<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>Restart Apach<\/strong>e<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>After installation, I restarted Apache to ensure the changes took effect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"EnlighterJSRAW\" data-enlighter-language=\"generic\" data-enlighter-theme=\"\" data-enlighter-highlight=\"\" data-enlighter-linenumbers=\"\" data-enlighter-lineoffset=\"\" data-enlighter-title=\"\" data-enlighter-group=\"\">   sudo systemctl restart apache2<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. <strong>Check Matomo System Report<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>After verifying the installation, I returned to Matomo\u2019s system check page. These libraries are essential for rendering graphical elements within Matomo.
